Race Date
Fairfield voters are heading to the polls tonight to choose their next First Selectperson after the death of former First Selectman Bill Gerber triggered an unusual contest. The race pits incumbent Christine Vitale, a Democrat who has led the town since last summer under a charter succession, against Republican State Senator Tony Hwang, who successfully petitioned to force this vote. There is also a third candidate, Matthew Hallock, on the ballot.
Kamala Harris won the town of Fairfield by 25 points in 2024, while Hwang won it by 8 in his successful bid for state senate. Turnout for tonight's race is expected to be unusually high (>10,000 votes) for an off-year special in the middle of winter, and polls close at 8pm ET.
